Aerial Assist is the FIRST Robotics Competition, played on a 25 foot by 54 foot field divided into two halves by a 5 foot high metal truss arching over the center line. Two alliances, composed of three robots each, compete against each other to score the maximum number of points. The game is centered around directing a 2 foot diameter game ball into goals on one side of the field. Points can be scored in a multitude of ways, ranging from basic scoring into low or high goals, tossing the ball over the central “truss”, and catching the ball following a toss from a alliance member. Extra points are given to robots that score into the low and high goals in the autonomous. The game focuses on “assists” — passing on possession of the ball to teammates as they move down the field and providing bonuses for doing so.
